THE TRUTH
I made a statement in an earlier post that I was “99% Vegan” or did I say 98%, I can’t remember, but I did say I would explain that, so here goes. While being vegan is not nearly as difficult as you think, there certainly are some obstacles along the way. Mainly for me it is my love of cheese (I think I mentioned that before too). And while I now understand the Health, Environment and Animal Welfare issues related to dairy and the dairy industry and while I also feel strongly in these 3 pillars, well…..I do cheat once is a while. I said I wouldn’t judge you so you can’t judge me. I know some of you will and this is ok – I am a big boy and I can take it!
PIZZA
My cheat is pizza and typically goat cheese and wild mushroom pizza. I make no apologies for this and I only feel slightly guilty after eating it. A few years back I discovered a spot in our backyard that yielded about 2 dozen big Morel mushrooms each spring. After one great harvest, I decided to try to make a goat cheese and Morel mushroom pizza, drizzled with an herb and garlic oil. OMG (yes I used OMG)! It was the best pizza my wife and I ever had and we both still have flashbacks to eating it. So, a couple times a year we eat a goat cheese and wild mushroom pizza – It helps keep us sane.
MODERATION
I am a firm believer that if you maintain moderation in your life, you will be happier, healthier and more sane. Where that line is drawn is up to you. Too many times I see people jump onto the next diet fad, eating lifestyle, exercise kick or whatever, but they don’t have the right motivation (remember my 3 Pillars) or they go in 110% and make themselves miserable. Life is too short to be miserable for sure, and soon enough you will revert back to your old ways. So I preach moderation to those who will listen. Would I like your moderation to be 99% vegan (or 100%)? Of course I would and that would be great if it is your moderation and it works for you. But maybe your moderation is eating a plant based meal once, twice or three times per week. Maybe your moderation is working out 3 days a week vs 6. If you can maintain it – If it makes you feel better – If it has a positive effect on you, your family, the environment, animals and/or the world – GOOD FOR YOU!
FOCUS
As I said before, the focus of this blog will be cooking and eating a great tasting plant based diet. It will be focused on my story and how it continues to unfold. I hope that something I say or do or did will motivate you in some small way to look outside of your box and try something new and different. Of, maybe this blog will serve as a motivator for you to keep going in a new direction you have already started. I would love to share your journey with you, so if something motivates you, inspires you or if you have any questions or comments, please use the Contact ME page to let me know. I will respond – I promise.
Goat cheese and wild mushroom pizza is the best!!
Thanks Kelsey for visiting my site and commenting on my post. Come back often as I will be adding new content and recipes every day. And don’t forget to share my site with all your friends, vegans or not!
So now that we’re excited, where is the recipe for “goat cheese and wild mushroom pizza”???
Thanks for your comment and question Paul. I haven’t perfected a vegan goat cheese recipe yet, but I am working on it. In the meantime, I will post a recipe for wild mushroom pizza that uses vegan mozzarella and you can add goat cheese if you prefer. When I cheat, it is usually when we are out at a restaurant!
Have you tried vegan goat cheese? or used feta? (Vegan of course) I use vegan blue cheese on my pizzas and wow, so good.
I am not judging, I am 99% also, I eat backyard eggs. I do not feel that it’s unethical and all of the beliefs vegans have about it causing health issues to the hens have been disproven to me by my homesteader friends and personal experiences being raised on a farm.
I have tried the vegan egg but its not always available so I eat eggs. I love your blog, make youtube videos, if you do, post me the link 😀
Thanks for your great comments. I don’t judge either – be the best you, you can be and keep striving to improve. My journey has progressed since my earlier blogs and I would say I am 99.9% vegan at this point. We use vegan cheese sometimes, Chao, Violife etc, but no longer use any real cheese. I have started writing again and adding new recipes. I just started a TikTok (@averagevegandad) – needs lots of work, but it’s a start.
