This Vegan Tofu Taco Meat is the real deal! I hate to brag, but I can make some really good food! It is true, some of that food takes a little bit of time in the kitchen and sometimes you just don’t have a lot time. As strange as it sounds, one of our favorite meals is just a very basic taco dinner. Nothing fancy – seasoned refried beans, lettuce, tomato, onion and taco sauce in a hard taco shell. Every time we have this we say, “Man, I love this dinner”. Sometimes simple can be great!
Recently, for some reason, I wanted some extra protein for my vegan taco and I didn’t want the same exact same flavor as the beans, so this is what I came up with. It added such a layer of spicy goodness to my taco – I was so HAPPY! OK, the truth is I didn’t measure what I was doing, so add a little more or less depending on your tastes. I think I am pretty close to what I did – sorry about that!
This is also a great addition to burritos, nachos or any other dish that could use a nice, spicy addition!
Vegan Tofu Taco "Meat"
Ingredients
- 1 16 oz Extra firm tofu Pressed
- 1 T Cholula Hot Sauce - or any hot sauce
- 1 T Ground Chili Paste
- 2 t Each of Cumin, Chili Powder, Garlic Powder
- 1 t Each Salt and Pepper
- 2 T Corn starch
- 1 T Coconut oil
Instructions
- Cut the tofu into slabs, wrap in paper towel and press out the water. I typically let the tofu sit under some weight for at least 15 minutes.
- Once the tofu is pressed, cut into small cubes (you can crumble if you prefer a size closer to taco meat).
- Place the cubes into a bowl. Add the hot sauce and the chili paste and coat well. Let the tofu sit for a few minutes to allow the liquid to absorb.
- Mix together the dry spices, not including the corn starch. Add the dry spices to the tofu cubes and coat well.
- Once all the flavor has been added to the tofu, add the corn starch which helps allow the tofu to get crispy.
- In a no stick fry pan, heat the coconut oil over medium heat. Add the tofu and fry until golden brown and crispy. This takes about 10 minutes or more. You can add a little more oil as needed.
- You can use hard shells or soft shells. I add vegan refried beans, lettuce, onion and fresh tomato and taco sauce or salsa. It you want, you can add a vegan cheese as well. Now make your tacos with all your favorite beans and veggies!
