Vegan Philly Cheesesteak

This Vegan Philly Cheesesteak has become one of our all time favorites.  It we are ever undecided about what to add to our weekly menu, my wife will always suggest my Philly Cheesesteak.  Now, we have never actually had a traditional Philly Cheesesteak, but that doesn’t matter.  My version of what I think a Philly Cheesesteak might taste like is just awesome as it is!

I know the ingredients might seem a little odd.  But don’t fret, they all come together wonderfully.  This sandwich is full of flavor, great textures and creamy cheese.  You need to give this one a try and let me know what you think!

VEGAN Philly Cheesesteak

My wife does not like anything that resembles meat in taste OR texture, so a Philly Cheese Steak would never be on her radar. But, this has become one of her all time favorite dishes.

Ingredients

  • 1 Med Onion
  • 6 Cloves Garlic
  • 2 Green Peppers
  • 12 oz Mushrooms - Mini bellas, oyster, or mix of both
  • 1 T Vegan Butter
  • 1/2 t Paprika
  • 1 T Garlic Powder
  • 1 T Onion Powder
  • 1 t` Black Pepper
  • 1 t Salt
  • 1 T Soy Sauce
  • 1 1/2 T Vegan Worcestershire Sauce
  • 2 T Tomato Paste
  • 6 Hoagie Buns
  • 6 Slices Chao Original Vegan White Creamy Cheese Or Vegan cheese of your choice
  • Sliced tomato and shredded lettuce Optional

Instructions

  • Coat a large fry pan with avocado or olive oil. Slice the onion and green pepper, dice the garlic and saute until soft. Remove from heat and place in a bowl.
  • In the same pan, melt the vegan butter. Cut the mushrooms into 1 inch pieces and add to the pan. Add the paprika, onion, garlic powder, tomato paste, salt and pepper. Saute until the mushroom are nice and brown and reduce in size by about half.
  • Add back into the mushrooms the green pepper/onion mixture. Add the soy sauce and the worcestershire sauce and cook for about 10 minutes or until it is well cooked and has thickened. Remove from heat.
  • Cut the hoagies in half, lightly oil the cut sides and sprinkle with garlic salt. Lightly toast the hoagies either on a grill or broil in the oven.
  • Take an amount of the mixture that will fill one hoagie and place it in a new, lightly oiled fry pan. Do this for the number of hoagies you are making, but keep each serving separate from each other. Place a layer of Chao cheese on each serving and heat. Once the pan is hot, add a small amount of water and cover. The steam will help melt the cheese.
  • Once the cheese is melted, place each serving on a hoagie, add tomato and lettuce if you want (I do, my wife doesn't) and serve!
